Bruk Creative commons lisens

Folk ER villige til å gjøre mye gratis så lenge de får litt kred. Vi laget kalenderen under creative commons lisens og plutselig stod folk i kø for å oversette kalenderen uten å få noe mer enn navnet sitt i liten skrift nederst på kalenderen

Gjenkjennelse + smil!

Tipsene i kalenderen er ikke revolusjonerende og det var heller ikke meningen. Folk liker å bli minnet på ting de egentlig visste fra før, så lenge det er gjort litt humoristisk. Målet vårt har vært at man skal trekke på smilebåndet et par ganger når man ser kalenderen.

Spre aktivt

Tidligere år har vi brukt litt tid på å poste kalenderen til en del blogger og f.eks usabilitynews.com. I år har vi foreløpig vært litt sløve siden vi har Twitter. Det eneste vi gjorde var å Twitre om at kalenderen var ute og så spredde det seg rimelig kjapt. Når det blir plukket opp av f.eks Smashing magazine, med 100 000 followers som twitrer om kalenderen så sprer de den effektivt for oss.

Hele verden redesigner i takt?

Vi har hatt mye diskusjon internt om konseptet snart er oppbrukt. I år har vi holdt på det grunnleggende ved kalenderen, men samtidig utvidet konseptet med ett blogginnlegg for hver måned slik at hele verden kan følge våre råd om hvordan du lager gode nettsted Foreløpig ser kalenderen ut til å være like populær som tidligere med 2 – 3000 besøkende hver dag, mange lovord og heftig spredning på Twitter.

The best idea will get an honorable mention, as well as a numbered limited edition of the 2008 Bad Usability Calendar. All suggestions that make the final cut will get awarded.

Finally, it’s here: This year the Bad Usability Calendar is, if possible, even less usable than previous years. Take a look at the earlier editions from 2005 (in Norwegian) and 2006. This years calendar displays exaggerated use of AJAX, navigation overload and a questionable topic map solution.

Update: As Jacob Nielsen pointed out in his latest newsletter;

“Violating yet another usability guideline, the file is formatted to print on European-sized paper, and there doesn’t seem to be a version designed for American paper sizes. It’s easy enough to scale the printout, even though it doesn’t look quite as good.”

As the largest room in the world is the room for improvement, we’ve made a version of the Bad Usability Calendar for all of your non ISO printers (PDF, letter-size, 1.4 MB) and (PDF, tabloid-size, 1.4 MB)

The process of making a new calendar started in November when we asked for suggestions on the new version. A special thanks to all of you that contributed! We recieved many creative ideas that we enjoyed and some that we used. We pledged that the best suggestion would be awarded a numbered version of the 2007 edition.

The winner idea came from Design Architect Dov Rosner at Amdocs Product Group. He proposed to dedicate one month in the Calendar to bad error messages. Bad error messages is one of the most annoying usability problems we know, and must rightfully be included in the Calendar. We have dedicated Mars to bad error messages. Thank you Dov! We also would like to give honorable mention to Sebastien Billard who proposed: – Use plain language : not “the month of the god of war” for “mars”. We used this idea on the making of February. Thank you Sebastien!

An important criteria for the monthly displays of the Calendar was that every month should be possible to use, but only in a most unusable fashion. Please let us know if we have succeeded!

This year we have chosen to give the calendar a Creative Commons license. This implies that we will allow other people to distibute and further develop the Calendar as long as we are credited (read the conditions here). We also allow translations of the Calendar.

We hope you all will enjoy it, and that it can help raise awareness of usability challenges.

Prosessen med å lage en ny kalender startet allerede i november og vi takker for alle kreative innspillene vi har fått til årets kalender! Vi utlovet en nummeret utgave av den nye kalenderen til den som kom med det beste forslaget til presentasjon av en enkelt måned. Vinnerforslaget vi har plukket ut kom fra designarkitekt Dov Rosner ved Amdocs, som foreslo en måned med dårlige feilmeldinger.

Ett viktig kriterum for oss når vi lager kalenderen er at alle månedene skal kunne brukes, bare på en lite brukervennlig måte. Bedøm selv om vi har lyktes med dette.

Nytt av året er at vi har lisensiert kalender under Creative Commons. Dette innebærer at vi tillater andre å distribuere og videreutvikle kalenderen så lenge de oppgir oss som kilde (Les lisensbetingelsene her).
